Every day, we promote our environmental values, from our production to our packaging. On this World Oceans Day, we want to inform our community about the impact of the fashion industry on the environment, as well as how we can remedy this situation.
Did you know that washing clothes releases 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean every year, which is equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles? Most of these fibers consist of polyester, a plastic fiber that is found in about 60% of clothing. These fibers generate 2-3x more carbon emissions than cotton, and are unable to decompose in the ocean.
Appalling, isn't it? But that's not all! About 35% of microplastics in the ocean are caused by the washing of synthetic textiles like polyester. These statistics demonstrate the importance of purchasing clothing made from eco-responsible textiles, and of ethical practices within fashion companies.
At Another Land Nearby, most of our fabrics come from organic textiles or recycled plastics. We want to create durable and comfortable clothing that makes people think about how we consume and that won't end up in our oceans. We have made sure to use raw materials recognized with the most important certifications for us, as well as GOTS and OEKO-TEX.
Let's work together to create a better world, and a healthy planet. Let's give back today to our oceans - they've suffered enough.
And you, how do you contribute to our planet?
